another comment about freedom
It is often said that a person should have the "right" to have an abortion or a man be married to a man or woman to a woman. I think this proposition should be examined. So to make the question clear. Should a homosexuals have the freedom or right to be married?
There are several directions to go with this. One is what is marriage? Does the institution of marriage itself allow for anything by one woman and one man coming together to form a union? For a look at what the dictionaries of the day will say here is a link http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=marriage. I think you will find the last definition intriguing as a Christian. As a Christian marriage is when God brings one man and one woman together in union to become one Gen. 2: 16-24. Now as a Christian we are able to look at Romans 1:26-27 describes homosexuality as unatural. But here is what I want you to note about freedom and its relationship to sin. Earlier in Romans 1:24 it is said that "God gave them over in the lust of their hearts to impurity" Okay so they were given over or it could also be translated deliverd over. These people are taken captive by their sin. They are ruled by it. The question of having the freedom to be "married" as a homosexual is a person asking one to condone a life of slavery to sin in the flesh. Romans 1:27 talks about homosexuals recieving a due penalty in their bodies for the sin that they have surrendered themselves to. People what might the due penalty be? Perhaps STD's.
Let us return to Romans 8 again. Romans 8:12 "So then, brethren, we are under obligation, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh" — Romans 8:13 for if you are living according to the flesh, you must die; but if by the Spirit you are putting to death the deeds of the body, you will live. Romans 8:14 For all who are being led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.
Romans 8:15 For you have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear again, but you have received a spirit of adoption as sons by which we cry out, “Abba! Father!”
In Romans 8:12 you can see that a person who is living according to the flesh is a slave of that flesh. A person living according to the spirit is free having recieved a spirit of freedom (Rom 8:15). What is my point?
My point is I have talked to people at Cedarville and other Christians who say it is wrong for us to pass an amendment that is solely based on our religious beliefs specifically that marriage is between one man and one woman only. They say that people should have the right to do their own. My point is laws are to ensure freedom not to take freedom away. A law that defines marriage as only one man and one woman is a law for freedom. A law allowing "homosexual marriage" is a law taking away freedom.
