This blog is mainly a blog that puts forth ideas. It is not about my life all the time. However, sometimes you will find postings about what I have been doing. It is mainly to motivate Christ centered thought.

Freedom what is it?

Freedom what is it? This was a question raised by a lecture that I heard today. The reason it struck me so much I think is because I read Romans chapter 8 this morning. The man in the lecture said that freedom was the ablity to do what you ought to do. Now let me say that again, "Freedom is the ability to do what you ought (carries with it a judgement of what one views as morally right or wrong) to do" Here is a different definition of freedom that might seem correct. Freedom is the ability to do what I want. Did you notice the difference between those two? The difference is one carries with it the idea of a selfish little child doing the first impulse that rushes into his/her head. However doing what you ought to do as the free way to live carries different implications. It is a life of freedom. I want to talk about this more but before I do. I wish to allow you to think about it and to form some thoughts and conclusions before I merely lay one out completely for you. So here is the way I would lead you. I suggest reading Romans 8 focusing specifically on the first 15 verse. Look at the idea of correct freedom from Romans. Correct as in the right view. We know with certianty that it is the right view of freedom because it is from the just judge God. Then please post your comments as to what you conclude. What is Freedom Christian? What is Freedom world (sinful nature/ Old nature)? I will be looking forward to hearing what everyone has to say:)

Freedom is an interesting thing because, in this world of sin, the only way to ensure freedom is to create a law that guarantees our freedom. The law is an accepted limitation of freedom. Romans 8 talks about our choices of which law to be bound to. We can be bound to the law of self, which in the end leads to death, or we can be bound to the law of Christ, which leads to life. The thing about freedom is that if the law is properly written you don't spend your time thinking about what you can't do, rather you reveal in the freedom afforded by said law. If we are under the law of Christ, then what great freedom we have. Instead of revealing in our freedom, we just walk up to the edge, or as is sometimes the case with myself, our sin nature drags us to the edge. There that old man talks about how much more fun it was on the other side of the law. We have incredible freedom in Christ, but often times we trade it for a very limited walk in sin. I guess the easiest illustration that comes to mind, is that of sex. So many people talk about sexual "freedom." We should be able to do what ever with whom ever when ever and how ever we want to, and not face any consequences. The consequences will haunt any joy out of future relationships and possibly scar or kill the body, even if forgiveness is asked for from Christ. While if we follow the plan laid out in the Bible, when the time of season comes for us to fulfill our God given sexual needs through marriage, we are free to openly express ourselves. Sin tries to lure us in with the promise of immediate freedom, only to later foot us with an un-payable bill. Christ says trust me and sacrifice, and I will reward you beyond that which you can ever do on your own.
